In the past, I contacted Apple multiple times. One thing I learned is that when their tech support suspects a possibility of a virus on your Mac, they usually suggest downloading and running free Malwarebytes.
While I have never found any malware on those occasions, I do know how Malwarebytes works and can help you decide whether you need it or not and whether it is worth paying for.
In this article, I would only cover Malwarebytes for Mac. There is also a Windows version, but I have no opinion about it.
The story of Malwarebytes for Mac started when it was called AdwareMedic. The product was a donationware developed by Thomas Reed. In 2015 Malwarebytes, a software company from California acquired AdwareMedic and rebranded it as Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. The company displays reviews on its main site. At the moment of writing, there were 123 reviews with an average rating of 4.8. Since most people usually leave reviews when they extremely happy or extremely unhappy with the product, the rating is impressive.
Most positive reviews mentioned the cases when the product was able to catch a virus or malware. There are a few negative reviews, and they mention problems with contacting the support.
And the majority of reviews mention that they were recommended by Apple tech.Malwarebytes Free vs. Premium
If you go to the Download page, you can see a table comparing Malwarebytes Free and Premium editions. Scanning for threats and removing malware is the same in both versions.
In addition, the Premium version comes with real-time verification. And this part is crucial.
If the free version scans and detects viruses after they get on your Mac, the Premium version stops the malware before the Mac gets injected.
So, every time you open a mail attachment or browse a site, the Premium version of Malwarebytes verifies that they are free from malware. The free version doesn’t do it.
It means that when you browse a compromised web site, the free software will let you download malware, install it, and run. Imagine, you somehow got Keranger, MacRansom, or another ransomware app.
How long do you think it will take until it encrypts the entire disk? If you didn’t run scans while the malware was running quietly on the background, you might end up with a totally dead computer.
Malwarebytes allows running scheduled scans, but the feature is only available in Premium edition.
Malwarebytes has an API that can be called programmatically, and I have to admit, I tried to devise a plan to force the free version to run on a schedule I could set up with a third-party app. Unfortunately, the ability to run scans is only available with Premium, so no luck.Is Malwarebytes Free Good Enough
To find how good is free Malwarebytes, I ran a test. The full video of the test is on YouTube:
I downloaded and installed Malwarebytes for Mac. After installation, I intentionally chose a free version (I could’ve choose a free 14-day Premium trial).
In my test, I had two keyloggers installed: Elite and Refog. Both are legitimate products, and they can be legally purchased online.
But since by nature they perform something that can be classified as potentially dangerous (if they were installed by someone who wants to steal your data), most antivirus products should detect them. Malwarebytes, even free ones, quickly detected them. So far, so good.
However, my Mac contained more than two keyloggers.
When I was working on testing antimalware solutions for Mac, I downloaded 117 malware samples to my Mac. They all resided in one folder on the startup disk.
However, the scan didn’t detect anything.
So, I browsed to my Virus folder and started AdWind. AdWind is a type of backdoor. It can download malicious software, execute remote commands, send data to the server controlled by a hacker, and record it through the webcam.
The only notification I got was from Apple, which stated that I shouldn’t download unverified software from the Internet. It’s a standard message you can get when downloading any executable. And in most cases, most users ignore the warning.
What about MalwareBytes? It didn’t warn me about anything.
But since I knew about the malware, I was able to find its traces: the folder it created under Users folder and a file in the LaunchAgents.
Then I ran another malware: Calisto.
Calisto disguises itself as an Intego antivirus installer. But this is not a real antivirus. It tricks you into entering an admin password (something we all do when installing antiviruses), but in fact, it created a new hidden folder called .calisto under Users folder.
So, what Calisto does: it’s another backdoor malware. It gives remote access to the hacker – it enables remote login, screen sharing, creates a hidden root account, etc.
Again, Malwarebytes said nothing.
The last malware I tried was Lamepyre. It pretends to be a Discord app, but it’s not. Instead, it takes screenshots and sends them to the server controlled by hackers.
Again, Malwarebytes didn’t warn about anything.
After that, I ran a manual scan, and finally, Malwarebytes detected all of them very quickly and offered to quarantine malware.
So, that’s the main difference between free and Premium versions: the free version does not support real-time protection.
The problem with this is that users may have a false sense of security after installing the program, when in fact, it does not protect your Mac unless you run manual scan pretty much every time after you do anything online or copy and file.What I Like About Malwarebytes
I liked two things:Speed
Malwarebytes is insanely fast. I tested a dozen of antivirus products, and I know what I am talking about: MalwareBytes scans faster than any other antivirus for Mac. On average, it takes no longer than 30 seconds for the Malwarebytes scan. However, there is a downside to faster speed, as indicated in things I don’t like section.Virus and keylogger detection
Malwarebytes found all malware I was able to run on my Mac. And it was pretty good with keyloggers. The only keylogger it failed to detect was Perfect keylogger, but it is was hard to detect for all AVs (hence the name Perfect).What I Don’t Like About MalwarebytesNo disk scan
Imagine you have a USB stick, and you want to check it for malware.
How do you do it normally when you have an antivirus? You plug it into your computer and point the AV to run a scan against the USB drive.
There is no such thing in Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes only detects malware when it is in memory; that’s why it scans so fast. Instead of scanning the entire disk and external drives, MalwareBytes quickly scans the processes in the memory, and that’s all.
If you try to open a file infected with a virus, then, depending on the version, the MalwareBytes will either do nothing (free) or scan it (Premium).Lack of featuresIs There A Free Version Of Malwarebytes
There three Premium features promoted on the compare screen: stopping exploit attacks, blocking ransomware attacks, and preventing access to and from known malicious websites. But if you look carefully, they are only available for Windows, not for Macs.

Viruses and malware, in general, are just one way to harm your computer. Unfortunately, lately, the hacker community became larger and more active than before.
One way to attack a computer is to find a vulnerability in the OS, such as macOS, and use it to deploy a backdoor app. Once malware is installed, hackers can use it and run various exploits, such as track keystrokes, remote login, or screen sharing and then steal your information. Frankly, I would prefer to have protection from both malware and exploit attacks.

If you notice certain changes in the MacBook behavior, such as sudden slowness, unusually high CPU, or Internet usage, and there is no other antivirus installed on Mac, then do what Apple tech support advises in this case: download free Malwarebytes and run the quick scan.
If there is a malware installed, the chances are that MB will find it.

Before creating the macOS virtual machine, you need to install the VirtualBox Extension Pack. It includes fixes for USB 3.0 support, mouse and keyboard support, and other useful VirtualBox patches.

Scroll down, select All supported platforms to download, then double-click to install.Create the macOS Catalina Virtual Machine
Open VirtualBox. Select New. Type macOS.
VirtualBox will detect the OS as you type and will default to Mac OS X. You can leave this as is.
Regarding the virtual machine name, make it something memorable yet easy to type. You’ll need to input this name in a series of commands, and it is frustrating to type a complicated name multiple times!
Next, set the amount of RAM the macOS virtual machine can use. I would suggest a minimum of 4GB, but the more you can give from the host system, the better your experience will be.
Remember, you cannot assign more RAM than your system has available, and you need to leave some memory available for the host operating system. Learn more about how much RAM does a system need?
Now, you need to assign a hard disk, which is the virtual image downloaded previously. Select Use an existing virtual hard disk file, then select the folder icon. Browse to the VMDK file, then select Create.Edit the macOS Catalina Virtual Machine Settings
Don’t try and start your macOS Catalina virtual machine yet. Before firing the virtual machine up, you need to make a few tweaks to the settings. Right-click your macOS virtual machine and select Settings.
Under System, remove Floppy from the boot order. Ensure the Chipset is set to ICH9.
Select the Processor tab. Assign two processors. If you have a CPU with power to spare (such as an Intel Core i7 or i9 with multiple extra cores), consider assigning more. However, this isn’t vital.
Make sure the Enable PAE/NX box is checked.
Under Display, set Video Memory to 128MB.
Now, under Storage, check the box alongside Use Host I/O Cache.
Finally, head to the USB tab and select USB 3.0, then press OK.Use Command Prompt to Add Custom Code to VirtualBox
It still isn’t quite time to fire up your macOS Catalina virtual machine. In its current configuration, VirtualBox doesn’t work with your macOS VMDK.
To get it up and running, you have to essentially patch VirtualBox before the macOS virtual machine will function. To do this, you need to enter some code using the Command Prompt. All the details are below.
Start by closing VirtualBox. The commands will not execute properly if VirtualBox or any of its associated processes are running.
Once closed, press Windows Key + X, then select Command Prompt (Admin) from the menu.
If your menu only shows the PowerShell option, type command into your Start menu search bar. Then right-click the Best Match, and select Run as Administrator.
The following code works for VirtualBox 5.x and 6.x.
Use the following command to locate the Oracle VirtualBox directory:
Now, enter the following commands, one by one. Adjust the command to match the name of your virtual machine. For instance, my virtual machine name is “macoscat.” Here are the commands:
After the completion of the commands, and presuming you encountered no errors, close the Command Prompt.Boot Your macOS Mojave Virtual Machine
Reopen VirtualBox. Double-click your macOS virtual machine to start it. You will see a long stream of text, followed by a gray screen.Virtual Mac For Vmware Windows 10
The gray screen can take a moment or two to clear, but don’t panic. Once the screen clears, macOS Catalina will begin installing. When it resolves, you will arrive at the macOS “Welcome” screen.
From here, you can set your macOS Mojave virtual machine up as you see fit. Warframe pistol status mods.
Pro Tip: Take a snapshot of your virtual machine once it passes the gray screen. If anything goes wrong down the line, you can return to the Welcome screen setup and start the process again.
Once you complete the macOS setup, take another one so you can jump straight into your macOS installation. Head to Machine > Take Snapshot, give your snapshot a name, and wait for it to process.How to Create a macOS Catalina Virtual Machine Using VMware Workstation Player
Prefer VMware over VirtualBox? You can create a macOS Catalina virtual machine using VMware that works exactly the same as VirtualBox. And, just as with VirtualBox, VMware also requires patching before the macOS Catalina virtual machine will work.
This part of the tutorial works for Intel and AMD systems. AMD users must use the second code snippet when editing the virtual machine VMX file. Read through the tutorial to see what this means exactly.Patch VMware Workstation Player
In the “macOS Catalina Virtual Image” section is the VMware Player Patch Tool. Before commencing any further, download the patch tool.
Then, browse to the location you downloaded the patch tool to. Extract the contents of the archive. This process works best when the folders are on the same drive (e.g., the VMware root folder and extracted archive are both found on the C: drive).
Make sure VMware is completely closed. Now, in the patcher folder, right-click the win-install command script and select Run as Administrator. The script will open a Command Prompt window, and the patch-script will run.Virtual Mac For Vmware Workstation
Do pay attention. The script whizzes by, and you need to keep watch for any “File not Found” messages.
The most common reason for a “file not found” or a “system cannot find the file specified” message is installing VMware Workstation Player in a different location to the default folder, and executing the patch from a different directory.
Once the patch completes, you can open VMware.Create the macOS Catalina Virtual Machine with VMware
Select Create a New Virtual Machine. Choose I will install the operating system later.
Now, select Apple Mac OS X, and change the Version to macOS 10.14. If you don’t see the macOS options, it is because the patch didn’t install correctly.
Next, you need to choose a name for your macOS Catalina virtual machine. Choose something easy to remember, then copy the file path to somewhere handy—you’re going to need it to make some edits in a moment.
On the next screen, stick with the suggested maximum hard disk size, then select Store virtual disk as a single file. Complete the virtual disk creation wizard, but do not start the virtual machine just yet.Edit the macOS Mojave Virtual Machine Settings
Before you can boot the virtual machine, you must edit the hardware specifications. Plus, you need to tell VMware where to find the macOS VMDK.
From the main VMware screen, select your macOS Catalina virtual machine, then right-click, and select Settings.
Like VirtualBox, bump the virtual machine memory up to at least 4GB. You can allocate more if you have RAM to spare.
Under Processors, edit the number of available cores to 2.
Now, under Hard Disk (SATA), you need to remove the hard disk created earlier. Select Remove and VMware will remove the disk automatically.
Now, select Add > Hard Disk > SATA (Recommended)> Use an existing disk. Browse to the location of the macOS VMDK and select it.Edit the macOS Catalina VMX File for Intel Hardware
This section is for Intel users and it involves the final set of edits you need to make before switching your VMware macOS Catalina virtual machine on!
Close VMware. Head to the location you stored the macOS virtual machine. The default location is:
Browse to macOS.vmx, right-click, and select Open with…, select Notepad (or your preferred text editor). Scroll to the bottom of the configuration file and add the following line:
Save, then Exit.

This section is for AMD users. Like the above section, AMD users must also edit the VMX file before proceeding. The AMD edit involves a few more lines than the Intel version, but you can copy and paste the data into the file.
Close VMware. Head to the location you stored the macOS virtual machine. The default location is:
Browse to macOS.vmx, right-click, and select Open with…, select Notepad (or your preferred text editor). Scroll to the bottom of the configuration file and add the following lines:
Save, then Exit.
You can now open VMware, select your macOS Mojave virtual machine, and fire it up!Install VMware Tools to Your macOS Catalina Virtual Machine
You now need to install VMware Tools, which is a set of utilities and extensions that improve mouse handling, video performance, and other useful things.
With the macOS virtual machine running, head to Player > Manage > Install VMware Tools.
The installation digavsc will appear on the macOS desktop. When the option appears, select Install VMware Tools, then allow it access to the removable volume. Follow the guided installer, which will require a restart on completion.Troubleshooting
There are a couple of things that can go wrong during the macOS virtual machine installation in VMware Player Workstation.
*If you cannot see “Apple Mac OS X” during the virtual machine creation wizard, then you need to revisit the patch process. Ensure every process associated with VMware Player is off.
*If you receive the message “Mac OS X is not supported with binary translation” when starting the virtual machine, there is a strong chance you need to activate virtualization in your BIOS/UEFI configuration.
*If you receive the message “VMware Player unrecoverable error: (vcpu-0)” when starting the virtual machine, you need to head back to the macOS.vmx configuration file to ensure you added the extra line and saved the edit.
*If you’re running AMD hardware and get stuck at the Apple logo, first power off the virtual machine. Now, head to Settings > Options > General. Change the Guest operating system to Microsoft Windows, and the Version to Windows 10 x64. Press OK, then attempt to power up the virtual machine again. Once the Apple logo passes, power down the virtual machine, then set the Guest operating system option back to Apple Mac OS X, selecting the correct version.macOS Virtual Machines for AMD Hardware
Apple uses Intel hardware to power desktops and laptops. Configuring a macOS virtual machine using Intel hardware is easier because the hardware specifications are very similar.
With AMD, the opposite is true. Because Apple does not develop macOS on AMD hardware, creating a macOS virtual machine on an AMD system is trickier.
Adding to this, I don’t have an AMD system to test macOS virtual machines on, so I cannot give you a detailed tutorial. I can, however, point you in the direction of several macOS AMD virtual machine tutorials that do work, so long as you are patient and follow each step accordingly.

Warframe is filled to the brim with secondary weapons to choose from, to the point where it can be a little intimidating at times. In this article, I will run through some of my favorite secondaries, which I consider to be some of the best secondary weapons in the game right now. You should find all these weapons to be rewarding in how they play, the damage they can put out, and their utility. They should also reward you for investing Forma into them, and should easily be able to do what you need them to do in the endgame. Best Secondary Weapons In WarframeMara Detron
The Mara Detron can only be picked up from Bara Ki’Teer when he visits the Relays. It will set you back 200,000 Credits, and 500 Ducats, and will only be available on rare occasions. It deals innate Radiation damage, and when built to one hundred percent status chance, it will dissolve enemies. Just lean into a solid status build, and you can’t go wrong with this shotgun that thinks it’s a secondary weapon.Staticor
You can get the Staticor from the Corpus Energy Lab in your Dojo. The standard fire mode is a slow-moving projectile that will cause area-of-effect damage. You can also choose to charge your shot, resulting in a faster projectile and large explosion. It deals innate Radiation damage, which will rapidly strip enemy shields. In many ways, it feels like a mini Lenz. I am always impressed by its ability to make any mission a breeze. With the right mods, this thing is going to melt most enemies you can find in most activities. It won’t stand up in real late-game missions, but it’s on this list because it is so much fun. Mod it with blast damage for hilarious enemy throwing hijinks.Catchmoon Kitgun
While we are on the subject of mini versions of primary weapons, we should discuss the Catchmoon Kitgun. You can build this at Fortuna if you have enough standing and the right components. It is pretty much a secondary version of the Arca Plasmor, one of the top shotguns in the game. This weapon will blaze a trail through any mission you are playing and is the perfect weapon to accompany a Sniper Rifle primary, just because it does so much damage to so many enemies. I’m a fan of the Catchmoon + Splat + Haymaker build. Be warned though, it hits so hard it can be tempting not to bother exploring other Kitguns, but you really should try out some different combinations.Euphona Prime
Warframe’s equivalent of a sawn-off shotgun, the Euphona Prime can shoot slugs or pellets, depending on what you need from it. The slugs will have more range, while the pellets will decimate enemies that get close to you. I like to pair this up with a melee weapon that does an excellent job at clearing crowds, and this is a backup for when I run into a target that is a little bit tougher than the average. The Pandero was introduced as Octavia’s signature weapon. It can fire in semi-auto to take advantage of high critical chance and damage multipliers, or it can dump all rounds in a burst to put out some massive damage. It’s also high in Slash damage, one of the most advantageous damage types in the game at the moment. Another weapon that offers great adaptability depending on the threat you are dealing with.Sicarus Prime
The Sicarus Prime packs high base damage that has a great balance between Slash, Impact, and Puncture. It also has a great Critical Chance and a decent critical multiplier. The burst fire nature of the weapon rewards accuracy, so people with great aim and recoil management will be able to get the most from this weapon. It should be noted; a Fire Rate mod will reduce the time between each round of the burst, making this weapon much more manageable. It is also worth noting that the high-Status chance makes this weapon suitable for hybrid Crit/Status builds.Knell
Knell is a scoped, one-shot pistol. It doesn’t sound very good, but a headshot will instantly reload the weapon, meaning that people with good aim can keep procing the weapon for infinite ammo. Landing headshots will also buff the weapons Critical and Status chance. This is Harrow’s signature pistol, and it works incredibly well with any Warframe that can effectively freeze enemies. It also has excellent long-range precision thanks to the scope. Definitely, one for people who believe in their aim, and some of the Rivens for it can just get silly numbers for extra damage and critical damage.Twin Grakatas
Are you ready to channel the awesome power of Clem? How often do you see a Primary weapon become a secondary weapon? Not very often, but that is what happens with the Twin Grakatas. Instead of one gun, there are now two, and they are in your Secondary slot, freeing up your Primary slot for something else. Hard to find a better deal than that. While the weapons do have pretty high recoil, that can be solved with the right mods, and it also comes with innate multishot, high critical Chance, and an extremely high rate of fire to churn out the damage.Akstiletto Prime
The Akstiletto Prime has been one of the top weapons in the game for some time now. Excellent accuracy, high Impact damage, solid Critical Chance, and very high-Status chance all combine to make these very viable at any stage of the game. They also come with two Polarity slots, making modding them very easy to do. They only really fall against high armor, but the right mods can take care of that for you.Pyrana Prime
Another shotgun that thinks it is a secondary, killing three enemies quickly will cause a second Pyranna to appear in your other hand for a while. The potential damage output from this weapon is insane, and it will rip high-level enemies apart with ease. High slash damage and huge critical Chance mean you want to build pure damage, and then lean into crits to get the most out of it.Akbolto Prime
The Akbolto Prime is a secondary that relies on Critical hits to put out the most damage. The base Critical Chance is 36%, making it incredibly easy to hit those red crits with this weapon. It also has a very respectable Crit multiplier of 2.8, so you want to lean into Critical chance and damage mods to get the most from this weapon. It will also cause enemies to crash into other enemies, doing additional damage to groups.Lato Vandal
Not many people are going to put the Lato Vandal on their list of best Secondary weapons, but those people are wrong. Or I am. Someone is wrong. I love the Lato Vandal and always have. It sits in a nice middle ground between weapons that spam damage, and slow firing weapons that hit hard. It has substantial base damage, high slash damage, and a high critical chance. It also reloads very quickly, meaning DPS downtime is limited. Finally, because not many people have it, and not many people use the standard Lato, you can get some pretty serious Rivens for this if you are lucky.
